We Need YOU!
Volunteer to be part of the SJ5K Event Crew
Volunteer Hands
We're extending a big invite to everyone
out there who may not be able to "do" the race but would still like to be a part of the excitement. By volunteering at the SJ5K "Beat the Egg" Run for Education, you are not only making a difference in the race organizers' stress levels, but also in making something super cool run smoothly. A smooth-running event means happy participants; happy participants mean they'll come back each year, which means more children will be given the opportunity to pursue an education and participate in school. We have many positions available from working the registration and refreshment tables, water stations, first aid, course monitors, the finish line, set up/break down, and of course cheerleaders along the route!

We sure would appreciate a few hands.
Give us a holler at sj5k@scholasticjourney.org if interested.

Mulundi Secondary School
New Children's Library
Mulundi Students
In January, Scholastic Journey was introduced to a High School being built
130k outside of Nairobi in Kitui, Kenya.
The children in this area are not able to attend the typical boarding schools due to financial reasons and day schools are uncommon. The community of Kitui with support of few individuals including Janet and Michael Johnson of West Seattle, WA are in the last stages of completing the Mulundi Secondary School (Day School)
and have requested help to provide the children with a library.

Scholastic Journey has created a Wish List at Amazon.com of books to place in the Mulundi Children's Library. The children read English and have requested books of classic literature and famous African authors.
When you purchase a book from the Wish List have it shipped to Scholastic Journey. The books will be packaged and delivered via post
or courier to Kenya in packets of ten to twenty books.

Butus wHeadmaster 1
Dear Friends,

November is here, leaves are turning and the Holidays are right around the corner! It's a fantastic time to tell you all about Scholastic Journey's progress during 2010. This has been an extraordinary year for the children in east Bali, our supporters and Scholastic Journey! The SJ Staff made two visits to Bali this year (April,October). Between stream-lining our administrative costs, fund raising, marketing our objectives, travel with a purpose and bringing smiles, hope and encouragement to children in the pursuit of an education, it has been a very successful year!

Scholastic Journey is dedicated to empower children around the world with the opportunity to pursue an education by helping to provide basic school supplies and uniforms to those children in need.

Five Backpacks Bring Kids to School
Scholastic Journey makes an impact
budiasah His father had passed away, his mother blind without an income, 13 year old Wayan had no way to pay for a school uniform or supplies he needed to attend school. Falling behind the other students his age and no longer eligible for free tuition due to his age Wayan stayed home to take care of his mother. The Headmaster at Butus Primary School told Wayan's story when asked if she knew of children unable to attend school due to lack of funds. Wayan should be attending middle school however, the Headmaster knew of Wayan because she was already helping his younger brother Budiasah
(pictured) and sister Kadek to attend her primary school. Upon hearing about this family Scholastic Journey set out to help right away.

Wayan received a complete uniform, a backpack full of supplies and has been back in school since July 2010. Budiasah and Kadek are both continuing to attend primary school and receive supplemental supplies.

Two children at the Penangan Primary School have received backpacks and uniforms as well. A boy named Budiasah along with his classmate a young girl named Rara. These children and their parents were so thankful to have the assistance.

Komang, a middle school student deep in the jungle on Mt. Agung who walks three hours a day to attend school was also in dire need of a new uniform and supplies. Both of Komang's parents have passed away and he lives with his grandfather. Komang has a great desire to attend school. He is a good student and was speechless to find out about his new backpack, uniform and supplies! Scholastic Journey was told of Komang's circumstances from villagers in Butus.

Scholastic Journey is continuously searching for children with the desire to attend school. Starting at the schools, using their resources to find children in need, Scholastic Journey is slowly being recognized within the villages of east Bali.

Over 7000 Pens Donated !
The fruit of a two week "pen drive" in April 2010
boys with pens For two weeks in April, Scholastic Journey was given permission to leave a donation jar for pens in the Alaska Airlines Seattle crew room. The jar was set up on top of the flight attendant mail files with information about Scholastic Journey's endeavors. Within two weeks the jar had been filled over and over by flight attendants contributing over two thousand pens. The drive for pens was a huge success and then a flood gate opened..
An Alaska Airlines flight attendant who also owns and operates White Horse Promotional Products donated 5000 brand new pens that had been rejected due to a printing flaw.  A huge THANK YOU to Tori!!

89 Cheering Students
Receive Brand New Batik Uniform Shirts!
Batik Shirts When visiting Butus Primary School in east Bali this past April the children had one request, new uniform shirts. Most of the students attending Butus Primary have been passed shirts from siblings or even previous generations. Many children have only one uniform shirt to attend school six days a week. Some children share their shirt with a sibling, so that each could attending school on different days of the week. Scholastic Journey fulfilled the children's request by ordering 100 batik uniform shirts The batik shirts were handed out by Scholastic Journey to the cheering students in October. The eleven additional shirts will be available for future students. Now all of the children have atleast one uniform shirt to call their own!
Ni Komang Dewi
Our Flower in Bali
Dewi and Kadek Our friend Dewi and her husband have made building relationships within the communities near Amed, Bali and the mountain hamlets possible. Dewi interpets for Scholastic Journey when visiting local schools and villages. Dewi has been visiting the homes of children who have requested aid from Scholastic Journey to assess the need of the family and find out if there are other children in the family who also need assistance to attend school.  Having a local connection has made finding quality uniform shirts, and supplies easy as 1, 2, 3..  as well as the distribution of these items to the children. We are grateful to have Dewi as an integral part of the  Scholastic Journey team in Bali. Thank you Dewi!

A Request For Uniforms
340 Students - East Bali Poverty Project
EBPP Logo The East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) is a non-profit organization established in 1998 by a British resident of Bali after an appeal for help by an isolated 7,200Ha mountain village, forgotten by time and progress. Now more than two hundred previously illiterate and malnourished children aged 6-15 attend EBPP schools in their isolated hamlets: the pride of their respective communities. Scholastic Journey has been asked to help fund the school uniforms for the upcoming school year. The uniforms are an important element of the children's pride and self esteem. Each uniform costs US$10.00. Scholastic Journey will need to raise approximately $3000.00 to assist these children. In pursuit of this goal Scholastic Journey makes a kind request to each of our supporters.  Please donate $10.00 toward the purchase of one uniform.

Make a Donation All donations made through this link are allocated specifically for the 340 Uniforms requested by The East Bali Poverty Project.  Share this link with your friends! The children of these mountain hamlets need your help. Thank you for your support!

E.B. Foote Wine Tasting
Debut of Bali Sea Salt for Sale
Many of the Scholastic Journey supporters braved torrential rain to take part in the wine tasting fund raiser at E.B. Foote Winery! It was a wonderful evening!
Two presentations, raffles, good wine and a lot of great  conversation made for a very successful evening.

This was also the debut of Bali Sea Salt for sale by Scholastic Journey! The Sea Salt is harvested in the village of Jemeluk which is one of the fishing villages where children directly benefit from the efforts of Scholastic Journey. One hundred percent of the proceeds from Sea Salt sales goes back to the children of Bali through the efforts of Scholastic Journey providing uniforms and basic school supplies.

A huge THANK YOU to Carole for donating the wine tasting event !!
With support like yours anything is possible! Thank you!

Dear Friends,

Welcome to Scholastic Journey's first on-line newsletter!  We have lots to tell you about and we hope you enjoy reading our "News From the Road!"

Updates to Website
Website PictureWe have been working hard to make our website, www.scholasticjourney.org, more representative of our organization and what we hope to accomplish.

Soon you will find a section on different volunteer opportunities, from events to opportunities for high schoolers who need service hours and projects, to information about our Volunteer Vacations plans.

We also are working on an on-line store where items such as Scholastic Journey logo t-shirts will be available.  We will also have t-shirts, tote bags, and note cards with designs from the children we visit on our journeys.  In addition, for the person who has everything, you can purchase gifts in their name for children in need, such as pencils, paper and backpacks.

There will be a section about our upcoming events, and access to our newsletters, press releases and other general information.

We will have a section about the various projects and areas we are supporting, so you can follow our progress and learn about other areas of the world as well.

Bali Trip Planned
Amed SchoolboysWe are so excited to be planning our trip to Bali this fall!  We are thrilled that we will be able to provide supplies and uniform vouchers to make a real difference in the education of rural children in Bunatan.  We will be using the trip to cement our relationships with local teachers and community leaders so we can continue to offer our support in ways they find useful.

Our trip will also be spent exploring other options like trying to figure out how to help the local villagers market and sell the sea salt that they already harvest and sell locally.  Wouldn't you like to try some organic Bali Sea Salt?

In addition, watch for more information about a "Volunteer Vacation" for Spring 2010.  We'd like to take a small group with us to Bunatan for a couple of days of work in the village.  Of course we will also plan a couple of days of fun exploring the culture and natural beauty that are Bali!
Wine Tasting 'Barrels' of Fun
C&P Coffee Co LogoThanks to everyone for joining us for our September 3rd wine tasting event at C&P Coffee Co in West Seattle with Ward Johnson Winery!

We had great company, great food, great wine, and great music to listen to as well, from the Garfield High School Jazz Band Trio!  We look forward to having another wine tasting event soon.

Volunteer Hours Available for High School Students

Many high school students need volunteer or service hours in order to graduate and Scholastic Journey has many interesting opportunities for volunteers.

The Holiday Bazaar will need volunteers in several ways, from setting up/cleaning up, to organizing the bake sale and ornament sale, as well as finding donations for the bake sale, and making ornaments for the ornamnent sale.  We would also like to have some sort of acoustic or vocal entertainment for the crowd to enjoy.

In addition to volunteer opportunities available at the Holiday Bazaar, we also would like to involve some high school students in projects like creating a logo for Scholastic Journey, working on promotional videos and presentations, and our website.

HS Volunteer orientation meeting will be at the Burien Public Library from 5:30pm to 7:30 on Sunday, November 8th in the upstairs conference room.
Be a Part of Our Journey

For those of you looking for an easy way to participate in any of our events or projects, we have a couple of options.

We would appreciate any supplies for ornament making at our Ornament Workshop on November 14th.  Any extra ribbon, glue, scissors, stickers, pipe cleaners, craft paper or other decorative items that you'd love to clean out of your craft closet we will put to good use.

For our Holiday Bazaar on December 5th we would love any donations of homemade holiday ornaments.  We are also looking for any tasty treats that you'd like to share for our bake sale at the Bazaar.

Any of these donations can be dropped off at your convenience at our mail box, #278, at 2701 California Avenue South West, Seattle, WA  98116.

The nice folks at Admiral Jct Mailing & Printing Center will accept any size packages for our mail box and call us to let us know we have a pick up waiting!
